“Declare Independence,” Björk’s inharmonious, snare-driven rally-cry against the use of officially notarized postage seals (“Make your own stamp!” one line commands), will be released as the Grammy-nominated Volta’s third single on Jan. 1. If you can bear to utilize your nation’s mail carrier at least one more time before taking the song seriously, the two disc CD/DVD and 12” are up for pre-order as a limited edition combo package at One Little Indian’s online shop. Otherwise, it’s only a short wait through the holidays before we assume the items will hit tangible shelves. However, make sure to keep some officially recognized cash in hand, instead of “Make(ing) your own currency,” as no retailer’s going to be down with your anarchy-symboled pecan shells or whatever.
Both release formats feature remixes of the stubbornly jarring and defiant song from Matthew Herbert, former Sugarcubes trumpeter Einar Örn’s Ghostigital project and Mark Stent.
Frequent collaborator Michel Gondry’s video for “Declare Independence,” in which Björk and company wail on some sort of weaving loom, is viewable via Spinner. It looks pretty straightforward until you watch this behind the scenes video, in which Gondry explains the blueprint of his “energy connection” machine.
Throughout this experience, Björk tours, soon to play her last two U.S. dates before hitting up the other side of the world. Check her official website's gigography to peruse the details.
