Now here is a music biopic that perhaps few saw coming, but one that sounds more interesting than the typical "guy gets woman, guy gets drugs, guy ruins relationship with woman due to drugs" story. The Vapors will tell the story of the Juice Crew, the 1980s hip-hop collective that produced some of the most groundbreaking rap of the late '80s.
Equally surprising/awesome is the film's casting, which will star Cuba Gooding Jr. as Marley Marl, the producer and DJ who created the group. Meanwhile, Clifrton Powell will play Mr. Magic, David Banner will take on the role of Biz Markie, Evan Ross will play MC Shan, Jackie Long will play Big Daddy Kane, Keke Palmer will play Roxanne Shante and Idris Elba will play Tyrone Williams (AKA: Fly Ty).
Other than its subjects, not much is known about the film. It seems likely that The Vapors would cover the "bridge wars" with KRS-One, but no casting for that part has been announced yet. The film goes into production this January under the direction of Furqaan Clover (Queen of Media). Marley Marl, Roxanne Shante and Big Daddy Kane are all producers on the film, so its depiction of the group probably won't be too controversial.
