Back in the day, we used to think of celebrities as amorphous entities. They were above us, in their own realm of celebritydom. They didn’t have real lives or real families, and they never made contact with anyone human.
Two things changed all that: 1) Us Magazine’s “Just like us” feature, which illuminates the similarities between us commoners and members of the exalted realm on a weekly basis, and 2) the existence of Paris Hilton, who proved that there are celebrities that can be trashier and more human than any non-celebrity.
Thus, it seems only fitting that Debbie Nelson, the mother of the one and only Eminem, is releasing a book entitled My Son Marshall, My Son Eminem, which will discuss her son’s depression. Years ago, we would have balked that a celebrity could even have a mother, much less that a celebrity’s mother could defame his glory with a “tell-all” book, but hey, such is life.
We can only hope that Eminem responds to Ms. Nelson’s charges with a song that analyzes his attitude toward his own mother. It would certainly be the first time that that has ever happened.
