Girls give rock school a go in new documentary

With a name like Palace, a little girl can either douse herself in pink and puppies or abandon her implied sweetness, scribble lyrics on notebook paper and rock the hell out. In a new documentary by Shane King and Arne Johnson, Palace and many other girls are taught to do just that: form a band, write songs and put their metal faces on.

Girls Rock!, which will debut nationwide next March, follows a few girls around a rock camp that prepares them for one gig with an audience of over 750 people. Rockers like Carrie Brownstein from the now-defunct Sleater-Kinney teach the youngsters lessons to combat a bombardment of self-image challenges and provide a break from real world pressures. As one girl puts it, "I'm not somebody like Hilary Duff who just wants to be famous."

Watch the girls wail and headbang in the trailer here.
