Johnny Depp and Michael Mann become Public Enemies

Johnny Depp and Michael Mann become Public Enemies

It's not often you hear of good things coming out of the current WGA strike. Sure, the occasional videos on the United Hollywood blog are funny, but a lack of new Office episodes and the bleak prospect of no more 30 Rock two weeks from now is enough to make any quality television appreciator hope that things get resolved sometime soon.

The exception to this is the upcoming Michael Mann film, Public Enemies, with Johnny Depp portraying John Dillinger. The project wouldn't be around if either Mann or Depp were forced to work on any of their previously upcoming projects, which have at the very least been delayed.

Public Enemies is set during a depression era mob scene, with Depp's Dillinger as the main draw. No other details have been released about the plot, though it's based on Bryan Burrough’s book of the same name. The book also goes into the actions of other famous mobsters, which is hinted at in the film's presss release, so it seems more about a particular setting than one individual. The film's script was written by Mann himself, who also wrote/directed Heat and Miami Vice.

Public Enemies will begin filming on March 10 in Chicago.
