With a low budget and a largely amateur cast, Once has improbably triumphed on the railways of film to become the little docu-drama that could. In 2007, the movie walked away with the Sundance Film Festival's coveted Audience Award, launched stars Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová on a U.S. tour, and even snagged a cozy number two spot on Paste’s year end film list. Now, having traveled up and down the hills of indie success, the film can finally come to rest with you at home.
Director John Carney’s extraordinary movie is set to be released on DVD with extras reportedly including commentary for the film as well as the music that was procured for it by the creators themselves. It also includes the standard documentary tidbits, along with a free download of “Falling Slowly” from the film’s soundtrack. Scheduled to come out Dec. 18, all of you fans of the Irish busker and Czech pianist can soon watch Once to your heart's content.
