Georgia might be known for its fried chicken, pecan orchards and syrupy drawl, but the state is also responsible for some of the best music to ever hit the radio. What I’m referring to is a deep-seeded musical past that existed before the days when R.E.M. was blowing peoples’ minds inside tiny Athens bars. It is a history that reaches back to artists that helped solidify the musical roots of this country, like Johnny Mercer, Otis Redding, Little Richard and The Allman Brothers. It’s appropriate, then, that a city in the state would host one of the most varied music festivals that the U.S. has to offer.
Stationed in the one of the most historically majestic locations in the country, the Savannah Music Festival has managed to grow into one of the most musically rich events you can find. Covering bluegrass, jazz, country, cajun and world music, the 17-day fest is composed of a plethora of showcases, each including several performers from similar genres.
This year, the Savannah Music Festival will be featuring the likes of The Blind Boys of Alabama, Modern Skirts and Bela Fleck’s Sparrow Quartet. For all of you Police fanatics who didn’t get enough of the trio on tour, Stewart Copeland will also be at the grand event previewing some of his original work. Along with new tunes, the Police drummer will be available for a Q&A session that will commence after the screening of his band’s documentary Everyone Stares: The Police Inside Out. But, even if none of these listed acts suits your fancy, with the SMF boasting over 100 performances throughout its two and a half week run, there is something for pretty much everyone to enjoy.
The SMF takes place March 20 through April 5. For ticket information click here, or go to the Trustees Theater box office in Savannah, Ga. Tickets prices vary and admission can be bought individually for each show, or you can invest in a SMF pass to experience everything this musical gala has to offer.
