Not like the film needs anymore negative publicity these days, but the Vatican released a lengthy editorial against The Golden Compass. The screed notes how, "In Pullman's world, hope simply does not exist, because there is no salvation but only personal, individualistic capacity to control the situation and dominate events."
This comes despite all the book's references to the church being stripped out of the film. The Vatican newspaper even called it "the most anti-Christmas film possible," despite its use of a decidedly Christmas-y polar-bears-and-snow motif. Apparently, the Vatican has yet to check out Santa Claus Conquers the Martians.
The Vatican is not the only religious body speaking ill of the movie. The U.S.-based Catholic League had already been urging Christians not to see the film, and all of these boycotts certainly haven't helped aid Compass' dismal box-office returns.
