After weeks of speculation as to what effect the Writer's Guild of America strike would have on the Golden Globes, NBC finally came right out and announced it. While the studio had been attempting some form of waiver for the awards along the lines of what happened to Letterman's Worldwide Pants and United Artists (and seems likely to happen with Lionsgate and the Weinstein Company), these propositions were ultimately rejected by the WGA, which maintained that it would picket the event.
"I'm hoping that they see the collapse of awards season and our ability to make interim deals with other companies as a sign that we are serious, and they need to get back to the table with us," said WGA West president Patric Verrone.
Jorge Camara, president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Asssociation, said, "We are all very disappointed that our traditional awards ceremony will not take place this year and that millions of viewers worldwide will be deprived of seeing many of their favorite stars celebrating 2007's outstanding achievements in motion pictures and television. We take some comfort, however, in knowing that this year's Golden Globe Award recipients will be announced on the date originally scheduled."
So yes, the awards will still be at the same time as previously announced (on Jan. 13), but it won't be televised. This shouldn't interfere too much with the general use of the award, which is to say , to help out with Oscar predictions. Those who tune in this Sunday will instead be treated to a two-hour Dateline focused on the films, an hour of the HFPA announcing winners in a press conference, and then an hour of of Access Hollywood visiting where after parties would be if they weren't also, you know, canceled.
