The shortlist for Oscar nominations came out earlier today, with No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood both tied for eight nominations a piece. Not only that, but the two films are directly competing in almost every category they're up for, from Best Picture to Best Adapted Screenplay to Best Cinematograpy. Although the top categories seem consist of a fairly safe mix of films, there are some interesting moments elsewhere in the list, including the fact that Johnny Greenwood's tremendous score for There Will Be Blood was left off the ballot due to technicalities.
Despite uncertainty as to whether the Oscars will go off without a boycott due to the lingering WGA strike, the Academy reiterated its earlier claims that the awards will happen regardless.
