Bradford Cox frequently updates the Deerhunter blog that originated as a dumping ground for random thoughts and photos. Over the course of barely half a year, the site has served as a cause of controversy, a place for band announcements and more, but most importantly, Cox regularly uploads music there. Be it mixes of stuff he loves, new songs under his solo-project moniker Atlas Sound or tracks from Deerhunter guitarist Lockett Pundt's other, excellent music outlet, Lotus Plaza, the blog is an aural treasure chest to say the least. Even the most hardcore Deerhunter completist would be taxed to keep up with Cox's prolific postings.
But some posts are a little more newsworthy than others, and it doesn't take an Atlanta-rock obsessive to appreciate something like this. On Monday, Cox posted the first song from Ghetto Cross, a band made up of himself and Black Lips vocalist/guitarist Cole Alexander. The song is called "Dog Years," and can be downloaded here. Or, if you'd prefer to stream the track while reading a review of it, Prefix has you covered. Indeed, because of the age we live in now, a song can be recorded on a Saturday and reviewed on the Internet the following Thursday. Talk about instant gratification.
The song itself is an excellent three-and-a-half minute romp with Alexander spouting choice off-the-cuff lines such as, "I love you like a fat man loves a doughnut." Meanwhile, ethereal (guitars? Cox's backing vocals?) noises provide a soothing counterpoint to the Tom Waits-esque percussive hollers and screeches that propel the track's rhythm. An added bonus is the banter at the end of the song where Alexander credits Lil Wayne and Ol' Dirty Bastard for lyrical inspiration, Cox adding Brian Eno to the mix.
According to the blog post, "Dog Years" will be part of a forthcoming 7" single released by Chunklet. Cox says he hopes the 7" will be ready in time for the upcoming Atlas Sound tour, which kicks off Feb. 19, the same day the band's debut, Let the Blind Lead Those Who Can See But Cannot Feel, hits record store shelves via Kranky.
