Body of War soundtrack features Vedder, Waits

Tomas Young, the disabled Iraq veteran at the center of Phil Donahue and Ellen Spiro’s documentary Body of War, asked Eddie Vedder a favor after the Pearl Jam frontman contributed an original song (“No More War”) to the project.

“It dawned on me that there was the possibility of making an album with songs that inspired me to keep going through the anti-war movement,” Young told Rolling Stone.

Young, 26, became paralyzed after a bullet hit his spine during combat in Iraq. Body of War chronicles his journey home and transformation into an outspoken anti-war crusader.

As the SXSW folks prepare to screen Body of War on Thursday, Young’s dream mix will come to life later that night when Kimya Dawson, Serj Tankian, Tom Morello, Brett Dennen, Brendan James, RX Bandits, Ben Harper, Billy Bragg and others unite for a 7 p.m. showcase at Stubb's.

The Body of War: Songs that Inspired an Iraq War Veteran double album, set for release on March 18, features tracks from Michael Franti, Lupe Fiasco, Public Enemy, Tom Waits, Bright Eyes, Talib Kweli, Bruce Springsteen and many others, who donated their tracks under the agreement that all proceeds would go to Iraq Veterans Against the War.

"The songs I selected for the record were tracks that inspired, motivated, and at times, literally saved me over the past few years,” Young stated.
