Songkick, a site that tracks and recommends live shows, launched its artist-comparison engine Battle of the Bands function last week. The meta-data software compares the popularity of artists at a given time by gauging MySpace listens, friends and profile views, blog mentions and Amazon sales ranks. Line graphs help show how the popularity of two or more artists compare over time.
Launching in October 2007, Songkick offered a plug-in that scans your library and suggests a gig to fit your tastes. The London-based site has since moved on to the Last.fm trend of ranking artists by popularity, looking at the overall online buzz rather than a small online community's number of listens. According to TechCrunch, the site follows any band with at least 50 followers on MySpace, which is approximately one million bands so far.
