ATL/NYC artists offer present to NMH's Aeroplane

Recently, the 10th anniversary of Neutral Milk Hotel's masterpiece, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, came and went. To celebrate, Pitchfork republished an old interview with Jeff Mangum online. Stereogum posted a touching write-up and series of videos. Other artists and magazines celebrated the date in a variety of ways, each one acknowledging the impact the album has had within the music community and on independent music overall.

Here at Paste, we'd like to wish the album a belated Happy Birthday, and give fans a present. A group of friends and artists from Atlanta and New York began a collaborative project three years ago that they released in February, in celebration of the anniversary. In 2005, they came together and decided to create a video for each of the 11 tracks on Aeroplane. Each individual artists had no knowledge of anyone else's work when they began their video interpretations, and were only give two rules: the videos had to be the same length as the songs, and no other audio music could be played throughout.

The results are fairly amazing in both their content and the diversity of that content. All are worth a view, and some are worth multiple views. At the very least, it's just one more excuse to listen to the album.

Below, watch Mangum perform the album's title track. Then head over to the Tomatoes & Radiowire site to check out the aforementioned videos. We highly recommend the video for "Communist Daughter," amongst others.
