Despite the harsh feelings some music lovers have for the recording industry, one can almost feel sorry for its run of bad luck in recent years. Recently, major artists have become independent from record labels or signed with non-traditional music companies. Now, in the latest spot of bad news, one the largest record companies is being hit with a lawsuit for piracy.
French software developer PointDev has started litigation against Sony BMG for piracy of its software. The company became aware of the illegal use after a Sony employee called tech support and provided a pirated license code. The Business Software Alliance subsequently raided Sony’s servers and found that 47 percent of the company’s software was pirated.
The news has many people thinking of Sony BMG’s (and the recording industry in general's) now seemingly hypocritical war against pirated music. Even PointDev has noticed the inconsistency of the music company’s rhetoric and points out that their lawsuit “is not just a question of money but more importantly [of] principle.”
