Broken Social Scene’s Canning to release solo debut

Broken Social Scene member Brendan Canning will release his debut solo album Something For All of Us July 22 on Arts & Crafts.

Canning first had the idea for a solo album back in January of 2007 when he started assembling songs he had written over time into a single, decidedly album-like format. He produced the album in Toronto with Ryan Kondrat and John La Manga, and emerged with 11 diverse tracks that showcase his wide range of musical influences and talents. While Canning has only performed lead vocals on three BSS songs, he has scored music for several films, and often moonlights as a DJ.

Canning hasn’t strayed to far from his BSS roots, though. Something For All of Us is part of the Broken Social Scene Presents collection, which premiered last year with member Kevin Drew’s album Spirit If…. Drew and fellow BSSers Justin Peroff, Andrew Whiteman and Ohad Benhetrit contributed guest vocals on Canning’s album, alongside other guest artists including Stars’ Amy Milan and Metric’s James Shaw. Broken Social Scene will perform songs from Something For All of Us during their upcoming live shows, including performances at Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza.
