“Why don’t you make like a Kennedy and die young!” The strangled cry comes from the back of a comedy club in Saskatchewan, Canada directed at a taken-aback Jamie Kennedy onstage. Kennedy responds with the astute point that “I came to this show in a limousine. You came behind 12 Siberian huskies.” The scene is the opening to the trailer of Kennedy’s new documentary Heckler which takes on the heckler in all its forms.
In the film, which has been making the rounds of festivals for the past several months, Kennedy strikes back at not only the live-show heckler, but at the army of critics spawned by the Internet. He asks questions of many interesting people also in the spotlight to explore the increasingly critical and heckler-driven world we live in.
The trailer features sound bites from the likes of David Cross, Dave Attell, George Lucas, Rob Zombie and Lewis Black, who says about hecklers, “they’re looking at you as if you’re in their yard, and have, like, gutted their cat.”
Kennedy takes on the bloggers and critics themselves including a temp worker named Asher whose heckling of Kennedy earned him a small spot in the film. In the trailer, Asher calmly gives Kennendy the damning verdict “I would have rather sat through a Creed concert than...that.” Other people with appearances in the documentary not in the trailer include Patton Oswalt, Greg Fitzsimmons, Judah Friedlander, Eugene Mirman, Henry Winkler, Jewel and others. You can check out the trailer, which as been posted on the movie's MySpace page, below.
Heckler is slated for DVD release soon.
