New details arise about Spielberg's creepy new website

TechCrunch has revealed that Steven Spielberg’s forthcoming paranormal social networking site will be called either “Rising” or “The Rising,” which may confuse some Bruce Springsteen fans looking for song lyrics rather than explicit alien abduction narratives.

No word yet on what—if any—connection the site will have to a specific film project, though “original video” is among the domain’s planned features. Otherwise, The Rising will be a place for friends-who-have-had-close-encounters, making it much simpler to realize when a whole slew of people are constructing the same future UFO landing spot out of side dishes.

“I know this sounds crazy,” Richard Dreyfuss portraying Roy Neary might say, “but ever since yesterday on the road, I've been seeing this shape. Shaving cream, pillows. I know this. Damn it! I know what this is! This means something. This is important. Is the Internet working today? Somebody call Comcast! I need to post something on FriendlyGrey42’s wall right now.”

More importantly, would today's Elliot be so protective of his glow-chested friend, or would he regularly upload YouTube videos of the creature gargling wildly at Wii Sports?

Of course, other forums for ghost-hunters and alien-spotters already exist at SupernaturalConnections, GlobalUFOSpace and assorted communities on established sites like MySpace, Facebook, Livejournal, etc. Heck, when the Internet became a common household thing around 1996 or so, we're pretty sure a third of it claimed membership to an X-Files web-ring. But Spielberg—who himself wants to believe—will likely bring a superior level of dedication. In fact, The Rising already has something the aforementioned websites lack: an animated logo.

You’ll probably be able to get onboard sometime this summer.
