It’s been a long time in the making, but The Decemberists’ drummer John Moen is finally releasing the first self-titled album from his new band and solo project, Perhapst. Coming out on In Music We Trust Records on August 19, a recent statement describes the record as “quirky, catchy, hook-laden indie-pop, experimental folk-rock, and even some twang for flavor, all delivered with a smirk and a smile.” Aw shucks, Perhapst! Even sweeter, the band’s MySpace page assures the record will caress you with “cloud-like softness” and will leave you “relaxed, at ease, and humming a song or two.”
Moen began work on the album when he was still drumming for Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks but was forced to take time off from it when he joined The Decemberists. Moen found time to return to the marinating record in between touring, managing to finish it in a matter of months before setting off on tour again. Moen waited for another break in touring to promote the record, and has now put together a group to play with him live as the album is at last being released to the public.
The bulk of the record features Moen on all instruments, though Malkmus makes a guest appearance, contributing his guitar skills to the album. The live band includes current Decemberist Chris Funk, Jonathan Drews of Sunset Valley and Eric Lovre of Dharma Bums. As of now, the band lists two upcoming shows on its MySpace page.
