Perhaps it's acquired a few extra layers of crustiness over the years, but there's little doubt that Lou Reed's sweet, sensual voice has always had the power to stand on its own. When the man talks, it's the sound of pure New York City cool seeping out through his lips.
So bless the folks at Sirius Satellite Network: they're giving
Sweet Lou his own show on their Sirius Disorder channel. Entitled "Lou
Reed's New York Shuffle," the programming block will feature Reed and
producer Hal Willner spinning an eclectic mix that ranges from rock to
jazz to opera. But hopefully none of that metal machine music, eh, Lou?
The show made its debut Saturday, but don't despair if you missed out:
Sirius will rebroadcast the inaugural program at 4 p.m. today on
Sirius Channel 70. The New York Shuffle will take place regularly at 6
p.m. on Saturdays, and fans can even submit song requests here.
Meanwhile, Reed continues to settle into his golden years, reportedly marrying longtime lady friend Laurie Anderson last month. The Daily Swarm (which is sort of like Paste's
longtime, virtual lady friend) also hipped us to an interesting quip that Reed
made at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this month. Apparently Reed
has officially denied the rock critic messiah, AKA Lester Bangs. Oh, Lou. You're so cranky sometimes.
Finally, Reed is on his way across Europe in support of his Julian Schnabel-directed concert documentary, Lou Reed's Berlin, due out in the U.S. on July 18. He'll be playing shows with a 30-piece band, a children's choir and sets designed by Schnabel.

be the next to get his or her own satellite radio program?
