Each week on PasteMagazine.com, we offer a new poll for your argument-inciting pleasure. Most of these polls start out in e-mail form, with a few topics making the rounds to a reply-all staff vote. The best topic is fished out of the pile each week, and generally the selection process is not that big of a deal.
But this week, inspired by a recent Filmmaking Frenzy contest, it was decided that we'd try a "bad movie" poll. But rather than ripping off our friends at Videogum, who are hunting for for the worst movie of all time, we thought we'd go the b-movie route, keeping with "best worst" classics such as Evil Dead 2, Zardoz, Plan 9 from Outer Space and the like: movies with low budgets, cheesy effects and cult followings.
This got people around Paste HQ excited. One staffer argued that, despite its ample budget, August Rush should be included because "it's an a-movie that worse than any b-movie." Another wondered to all, "Why even put this up for a vote? If you've seen Troll 2, you'll just know. There's really no contest here. Nilbog forever." The responses nearly spiraled out of control, as witches, leprechauns and, worst of all, Brendan Fraser, all reared their ugly head throughout the conversation. It was brutal.
And then, the YouTube clips began...
A few folks spoke up for Gymkata, using its tagline for extra oomph, "Combine the discipline, the timing and the power of gymnastics with the explosive force of karate, and a new, all-powerful martial art is born - GYMKATA":
Others stumped for movies as varied as Kiss Me Deadly...
...and Witchboard (featuring Tawny Kitaen and some really awesomely bad acting"):
Obviously, it wasn't easy narrowing down the field, and many prime candidates had to be eliminated, but we've got a pretty solid set of quality b-movie flicks for your perusal. So have at it. The final results will be continually updated on the left side of the homepage, which is where you can also cast your vote. We figure that several of these movies are pretty well-known, but just in case you have trouble deciding or feel like you need more research, here are YouTube clips (scenes, trailers or montages) for each and every one. You can thank us later for giving you an excuse to procrastinate through half of your work day:
