Bo Diddley, known as both a founding father of rock n' roll and a pioneer in the transition from blues to rock, died today (June 2) at age 79.
Diddley released his first record in 1955 and had been recording and touring ever since, right up until May 2007 when he suffered a stroke during a concert in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Three months later Diddley also suffered a heart attack. After his stay in the hospital he returned to his Florida home for rehabilitation.
Diddley was known for his street-performer style, quick-witted lyrics and unique guitar beats, as well as his signature black hat and glasses. His music and style has been the inspiration for countless covers and imitations in contemporary music.
Diddley is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award recipient and a winner of countless other awards. He has a historic marker on the Mississippi Blues Trail in his hometown of McComb, Miss.
