Girl Talk asks fans to pay what they want for Animals

Beloved by club kids, despised by music industry lawyers and acknowledged by many as a mash-up master, Girl Talk's Greg Gillis recently announced that he is ready to release a new set of sweat-soaked anthems.

His new album, Feed the Animals, will be available for download on his Illegal Art label in the coming weeks, but a physical album won't be released for a few months. This echoes the sentiment Gillis offered Paste when he caught up with us recently. "The moment I'm done and have it mastered and finalized, it'll be up on the Internet," he said. "So I'd say, like, mid-May to June, you should probably hear it."

Known for his copious use of samples, Girl Talk manages to cram 300 into the 55-minute Animals. But he's not just borrowing songs for this album. Taking a cue from Radiohead's "pay what you want" strategy Gillis is asking fans to decide what his new record is worth.

With all those samples, the copyright sirens are bound to start blaring, as they always do around a Girl Talk release. But while Vanilla Ice never acknowledged sampling David Bowie on "Ice, Ice Baby," it would be an uphill battle for Girl Talk to claim "My Humps" as "original material."
