Guy Maddin co-writing film with John Ashbery

In one of those sort of odd collaborations that actually makes a bit of sense when you think about it, Guy Maddin is planning on writing an upcoming feature with a longtime friend. "It’s called Keyhole," Maddin tells Paste. "Which I’m co-developing with the poet John Ashbery."

Ashbery might not be a familiar name to cinema fans, likely because that's not his medium. Rather, he's best known for his Pulitzer/National Book Award/National Book Critics Circle award-winning collection of poems Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror. The pair previously worked together on Brand Upon the Brain, with Ashbery providing the narration in some venues, and his version of the narration is one contained on Criterion's DVD release this August.

Inspired by Raymond Roussel's New Impressions of Africa, the film will be about the different ways people choose to view things. "I think of it as being a choose your own adventure," Maddin says. "Kind of a movie labyrinth."

Look forward to more about Maddin's upcoming projects in Paste's upcoming interview.
