Guy Ritchie to give Sherlock Holmes a go

Now that Neil Marshall is off the project, Guy Ritchie is on board to write and direct Warner Bros’ reincarnation of the story of Sherlock Holmes. Attempting the same kind of cinematic realism as other Warner blockbusters such as Batman Begins, Ritchie intends on tapping into the more nuanced qualities of Holmes’ character, highlighting his adventurousness and impeccable fighting abilities.

Fresh off the heels of wrapping London-based crime flick RocknRolla, Ritchie was in talks of making an adaptation of the comic Sgt. Rock alongside Joel Silver. Presumably that project has been laid aside for Holmes. Ritchie will rework and add to the script that Michael Johnson began.

The adaptation will be based on a comic book concept from Lionel Wigram, who will produce the piece with fellow former Warner exec Dan Lin. Wigram is known for his work on the Harry Potter films while Lin most notably produced The Aviator and The Departed. This most recent version of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s detective from 221b Baker St. will join a list of some 200 television and film versions of the sleuth.
