Kevin Smith would like his new movie, which happens to be about making an X-rated movie, to get an R rating, go to theaters, and bring mirth to many a gutter-minded American. Instead, Zack and Miri Make a Porno is fighting a restrictive NC-17 rating from the MPAA.
The film stars Judd Apatow darling Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks as Zack and Miri, a couple of friends who decide that making a porno movie might be a really effective (not to mention titillating) way to make some cash. As you can imagine, awkward sexual hilarity ensues.
The ratings board, however, is not all that amused.
“The MPAA is gunning for us, I think,” Rogen told MTV recently. “It's a really filthy movie. I hear they are having some problems getting an R rating from an NC-17 rating, which is never good."
An NC-17 rating would put the kibosh on a theatrical release of Zack and Miri Make a Porno, so odds are Smith will have to tame the theater version down enough to get a releasable R rating. For the curious (you know who you are), though, there’s always the DVD release, which will most likely include all kinds of, um, enticing extras and deleted scenes. Based on the teaser trailer, we can only begin to imagine what those extras will hold.
Zack and Miri will be Smith’s 10th trip to the theaters as a feature film director. The movie, now in post-production, is scheduled to hit theaters (with at least an R rating) in October of this year.
