Brad Pitt getting jiggy with his iPod. John Malkovich punching Brad Pitt in the face. A bearded George Clooney hitting on his Michael Clayton co-star Tilda Swinton. If these scenes intrigue you to any extent whatsoever, then there's a certain movie trailer you need to see:
Set for release Sept. 12, the Coen Brothers' latest effort, Burn After Reading, looks like a return to their familiar madcap shenanigans, following the desert-brown existentialism of No Country For Old Men. In fact, its trailer already has the people at /Film invoking the holy name of The Big Lebowski. Whether Burn proves so mind-bendingly surreal remains to be seen, but the cast is certainly shaping up to be just as juicy.
Besides the obvious A-listers in Pitt and Clooney, veteran support players like Malkovich, Swinton, Frances McDormand, J.K. Simmons and Richard Jenkins ensure that the film will be superbly acted, at the very least. The plot entails two gym employees (Pitt and McDormand) stumbling upon an ex-CIA dude (Malkovich) and his "secret shit." Hilarity, naturally, ensues.
Meanwhile, the Coens continue to excel as a prolific pair of auteurs, with stuff like The Serious Man, Hail Caesar, and The Yiddish Policeman's Union somewhere in their pipeline. Let the good cinema continue to flow!
