When gravelly crooner Tom Waits stopped in El Paso on his Glitter and Doom Tour, he didn't expect to be greeted by the fuzz. "I paid all those tickets," he joked. "She was dead when I got there."
In actuality, the uniformed officer who approached him on stage at the Plaza Theatre foreshadowed gift-giving rather than an arrest. Susan Boyd, an El Paso councilwoman, entered the stage soonafter to award Waits with an official key to the city of El Paso, Texas.
"This is a first for me," he said. "A real first."
Waits will continue on his carefully-plotted summer tour, to close in Atlanta, Ga. Here are the remaining dates:
