Annette Bening elected to join Academy board

“…And finally, I’d like to thank the Academy, especially Ms. Annette Bening for being the newest Academy board member and the board's only first-timer…”

The acceptance speeches at the next Academy Awards ceremony, held early next year, may well go something like that now that actress Bening is joining the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science’s Board of Governors.

The 50-year-old Bening is one of 14 members who were just elected to dole out Oscars statuettes in honor of Hollywood excellence, and the only member-elect who has never served before. There are currently 43 governors on the Academy board, representing 15 branches of film production, which include categories from short film to acting to makeup design.

Bening is well known in Hollywood both for her roles in films such as Running With Scissors (2006), American Beauty (1999) and The American President (1995), and for being half of Hollywood power couple with actor-husband Warren Beatty. She has been nominated three times for an Academy Award for her roles in The Grifters (1990), American Beauty and Being Julia (2004).
