It appears that Damien Jurado has come full circle. On his forthcoming album, Caught In The Trees, the singer/songwriter has diverged from the gentle folk and fictional narratives for which he's known to explore more introspective storytelling backed by rock power.
This shift calls to mind Jurado's early days playing in trash/punk outfits whose music was more personal, a style he markedly departed from to pursue soft, oft-dark folk songs that rarely waxed confessional. “I just wish more people would take the focus off themselves and turn it to something else. They should turn it to the outside instead of the inside, " Jurado told Paste in 2005.
Jurado's comments about his new solo album appear to signal a change of heart, or inspiration at least. "It is the first time that I have ever written from a personal standpoint, unlike in the past, were all of my songs were short stories. There is a line in one of my songs where I say, 'How does it feel to be what ou sing about?' I'm talking to me," he recently explained to CMJ.
Multi-instrumentalist Jenna Conrad and drummer Eric Fischer worked with Jurado on Caught In The Trees, which was produced by Kory Kruckenberg and Casey Foubert.
