"I ain't doing nothin’ but movin’ on, let the truth be known
But they talk that freedom matters, and didn't even leave a ladder, damn."
-Lil Wayne, “Tie My Hands”
And folks say he only raps about weed and candy-coated entendre...
This piercing Hurricane Katrina-inspired line, coming at the end of the song’s first verse, was penned not for Tha Carter III, but for an upcoming film film about a basketball team in New Orleans.
While the song (which features Robin Thicke) proves to be one of Weezy’s most introspective to date, it is certainly not the first time he has tackled the state of his faithful stomping grounds and his issues with the government response to Katrina. Tha Carter II came out just after the disaster and was therefore almost entirely completed before Katrina, the disaster only showing up as a passing mention. But between C2 and C3, Wayne put out enough mixtapes to make Ryan Adams jealous, waxing poetic on the disaster on several occasions (most notably on his impassioned “Georgia... Bush” from Dedication 2). And he carried the subject matter into “Tie My Hands,” which is one of C3's highlights..
Hurricane Season is the film (formerly entitled Patriots), directed by Tim Story (Fantastic Four), and it also marks Wayne’s first featured movie role. It takes place one year after Katrina and follows a high school basketball coach in Marrero, La. that assembles his team out of players from five different high schools that were displaced by the hurricane. Aside from Wayne, it also stars Forest Whitaker and Bow Wow, whose acting chops have matured immensely since he dropped the Lil from his moniker.
Hurricane Season is slated for a Christmas day release from Dimension Films.
