Rumors about TV shows turning into movies are getting everyone all hot and bothered this summer, especially if a little more Sex gets thrown into the mix. HBO’s hit series Sex and the City recently became New Line Cinema’s hit summer movie, and the rumors of a sequel are already boiling.
Fanning the flames is head of HBO programming Michael Lombardo, who reportedly told reporters at the Television Critics Association, “There is enormous interest by Warner Bros./New Line to do another Sex and the City. And I think, in fact, they’re trying with our help to put that together now. When that happens, how long between, can’t say
I think everybody associated with that project was really heartened by the enthusiasm from fans and by the new fans of the show.”
The movie, released May 29, has grossed over $146 million at the box office domestically, over $57 million of which came in on its opening weekend. That’s quite a bit of fan enthusiasm.
HBO co-president Richard Plepler is in on the buzz as well. "Everybody came away feeling very excited by [the first film's] quality
and its success, so that always invites the possibility of a
continuation," Plepler told People magazine. "It's really up to [director] Michael Patrick [King] and Sarah Jessica [Parker] and the rest of the girls. But do I think at some point in
the next four to five years there's a likely possibility? Yeah, I think
there's a likely possibility."
The movie's cast includes the four stars of the HBO show, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristen Davis, and also features singer Jennifer Hudson of Dreamgirls.
