Supergrass teams with Foo Fighters for summer tour

Britpop has been shrinking steadily from the mainstream since its heyday in the mid '90's. But Oxford quartet Supergrass has survived, both outliving and eventually outgrowing the movement that vaulted its members to stardom.

While many of the band’s counterparts faded into obscurity (Blur) or achieved somewhat dubious notoriety (Oasis’ Noel and Liam Gallagher ), Supergrass has continued recording and touring, producing music that has evolved far beyond its 1995 debut I Should Coco.

The band released its sixth album, Diamond Hoo Ha, in June via Astralwerks. The album’s title was taken inspired by frontman Gaz Coombes’ and drummer Danny Goffey’s short-lived band The Diamond Hoo Ha Men, formed when Supergrass bassist Mick Quinn was sidelined after a bizarre sleepwalking accident . The album was later recorded at Berlin’s Hansa Studios, where David Bowie cut Heroes and Low.

Coombes and his mates will be hitting the road in July with a little band called the Foo Fighters to promote Diamond Hoo Ha, and will also squeeze in a few solo performances in Los Angeles and New York. The band will be playing classics such as “Alright,” alongside new songs including “Diamond Hoo Ha Man.”

So what have we all learned from this story? Never underestimate the danger of sleepwalking! That, and the British popsters of Supergrass are alive and well, if only a little worse for the wear and tear.
