If you want to see an endearingly awkward teenager thrust into a difficult position, Canadian wünderkind Michael Cera is your go-to-guy. After his career-defining stint as George Michael in
Arrested Development and headlining roles in
Superbad and
Juno (which just happened to be
Paste's
movie of the year for 2007), Cera is set to star in the upcoming music-hipster-teen-romance flick
Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist. The movie, which is already making the festival circuit and is set for
nationwide release on October 3, will see Cera and co-star Kat
Dennings as, respectively, the titular characters. MTV movies recently unveiled a
teaser poster for the film. With industry buzz calling it "the next
Juno," it looks like Cera might get to add another feather to his cap soon.
The film is based on the 2006 novel of the same name by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan. In it, Nick O'Leary, the bassist and sole straight member of queercore band The Jerk-Offs sees his ex at a show and asks a total stranger (Norah Silverber, natch) to be his girlfriend for the next five minutes to make her jealous. One kiss and hasty exit from the club later, and Nick and Norah are hurtling off into the New York City night in search of a secret show and maybe, just maybe, romance. Awwwww.
Years from now, when Cera is walking the stage to receive his lifetime-achievement Oscar, we'll look back and smile a little at the memory of the nerdy boy who first stole our hearts by having a crush on his cousin. Or maybe it was merely
drunk history. Either way, the dude's gonna stand as the poster boy for introverted teenagers who would rather dance in their bedrooms to Belle & Sebastian on a Saturday night than go out, and that's just fine by us.
