According to Internet Movie Database (IMDb) users, the answer is none other than The Dark Knight, which has claimed the top spot on the site’s list of the top 250 movies of all time after just one weekend in theaters.
The Dark Knight is topping other lists as well, such as making the most money ever on opening weekend. Christopher Nolan’s Batman flick raked in $155.3 million in three-day box office sales, breaking the previous record of $151.1 million set by Spider Man 3 in 2007.
The fact that the movie opened in the highest number of theaters of any movie ever probably helped set the income record: 4,366 theaters played the movie this past weekend. Even with so much availability, eBay online auctions and Craigslist listings had The Dark Knight movie tickets selling for as much as five times face value.
As for the IMDb list, the movie’s ranking is expected to fall as more votes are entered and the hype around the film cools off. The Godfather, for example, has over 288,000 votes, far more than its number one replacement. For now, though, The Dark Knight is making history as an overnight classic.
