Tom Morello readies new solo album, stays busy

Tom Morello, he of Rage Against The Machine and Audioslave guitar-ripping fame, is set to release his second solo disc, The Fabled City, on Sept. 30. The disc, out on Epic Records, features appearances from Serj Tankian of System of a Down and Shooter Jennings across its 11 tracks.
In 2007, under the name The Nightwatchman, Morello released One Man Revolution. Now called Tom Morello : The Nightwatchman, Morello plans to tour widely in support of The Fabled City, though dates have not yet been released.

“My goal was to capture the energy and emotion of The Nightwatchman live shows,” Morello said in a statement. “There is a much more rocking quality to this record, solos and riffs, mixed with darker acoustic songs. I think my singing has come a long way as well. I had a lot of devastating losses of family and friends during the past two years and The Fabled City is a search for hope through music and confronting injustice."

The fact that The Nightwatchman had time to record an album at all is somewhat of a surprise given Morello’s multiple engagements. He has been busy working as a political activist: through his and Tankian’s organization Axis of Justice, Morello and other musicians, fans, and politicians work together for social justice. As a music producer, he’s worked with Puff Daddy and The Crystal Method, amongst others. Since spring of this year, Morello has been on a trip he organized, The Justice Tour, to celebrate the 60th anniversary of The Human Rights Declaration.

He was also an animated avatar in Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock. If that wasn’t enough, he’s also been scoring soundtracks for movies all over the place, like The Matrix, Collateral, Charlie's Angels, Talladega Nights, XXX: State of the Union and Iron Man, the latter of which he acted in.

Phew.

Later this summer, Morello will play across Eurpoe at a number of festivals with Rage Against the Machine before the band's headlining gig at Lollapalooza on Aug. 2.
