...Trail of Dead splits from Interscope, announces album

We've never been quite sure what the ellipses referred to in ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead's micro-fiction-length moniker, but we've got a new theory. The dots, perhaps, harken to the time before major labels—to a happier, indier world.

This new interpretation comes informed by ...Trail of Dead's recent choice to move away from Interscope Records after spending six years and three albums on the company's payroll. The band shifted recently to Justice Records, whose mission station waxes poetic on "artist empowerment," and announced the launch of its own imprint, Richter Scale Records.

Trail co-founder Conrad Keely takes the move seriously, explaining that this will "allow [the band] to seek the creative freedom envisioned by the founding fathers of our great nation, immune from the tyranny of the corporate ogre."

While we're unsure exactly which constitutional amendment secures this right, we'll send a few interns to scour sub-clauses and get back to you. Until then, look for the relatively ogre-less partnership between Justice and Richter Scale to yield ...Trail of Dead's sixth studio album in January 2009, with more details forthcoming. The album was already recorded in Austin, Texas this past year, video diary and all.
