The Counting Crows latest,
Saturday Nights and Sunday Mornings, is supposed to represent the dichotomy that exists within the band's music and, in turn, the band itself. As lead singer Adam Duritz explained, "Saturday night is when you sin and Sunday is when you regret. Sinning is often done very loudly, angrily, bitterly, violently." Therefore, Saturday nights bring the rock, and Sunday the morose melodies.
As far as dichotomy-based conceptual albums go, this one exuded a clarity certain
other much-hyped theme albums of recent years lacked. And it's now being supported by a long December (sorry, couldn't resist) of touring in the U.K. The Crows (Duritz especially) are known for their elaborate and extensively thought-out live shows. Duritz is known to rewrite the arrangements to the band's earlier hits and current catalog alike up to five times a tour, bringing an individual experience to that classic sing-a-long of "Mr. Jones" you'd been waiting for long ever since
Dawson and Joey broke up.
If you're somewhere between Nottingham and Glasgow this summer, see for yourself. Ben Folds and Melee will also be there to support the boys.
