Doom 4 promises beautifully-rendered descent into hell

| | Comments (0)
If you grew up in the mid-'90s, odds are you had some kind of exposure to the seminal computer game Doom. Maybe you were one of the kids who spent countless afternoons roaming the demon-infested hallways of the UAC laboratories, shooting up hellspawn and absorbing improbable amounts of return fire (possibly while listening to metal.) Or perhaps you were turned off by the game's hyper-violent ethos, which ruffled the feathers of more than one member of the U.S. legislature.
Doom's touch extended beyond that golden decade as well. After mainstreaming the controversial "first person shooter" in the '90s and spawning a genre of copycats and clones, Doom 3 was widely credited as having ushered in the "next generation" of games in 2004. Developer Id Software is hoping lightning will strike a fourth time with the announcement of Doom 4 for the PC (and probably the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3).

After announcing the title at the annual Id convention QuakeCon, Id staffers John Carmack and Todd Hollenshead went on to boast that Doom 4's Tech5 engine will push PCs to their limit...which means it will look really, really pretty. Well, pretty in the mangled-demon-rising-from-the-bloody-maw-of-hell kind of way.

The game is tentatively set for a third-quarter release in 2009. Maybe this time Trent Reznor will actually do the music. You know, like this thing wasn't already going to give us nightmares.
