Edwin A. Salt to star Angelina Jolie instead of Tom Cruise

August 14, 2008  |  1:37pm
The title role in Edwin A. Salt, a male CIA agent, may sound like a role more suited to Tom Cruise than Angelina Jolie, but that’s about to change. Cruise, tentatively slated for the lead role in the Columbia Pictures thriller, has been replaced in negotiations by Jolie. The screenplay will be rewritten to accommodate Mr. Salt’s sex change, as will the film’s title (our money’s on Edwina Salt). Phillip Noyce will direct.

Recently seen in the successful Wanted, Jolie in the Salt role would portray a spy who has to prove she’s not trying to assassinate the president. Ever the busy lady, she’s also scheduled to play the lead in Atlas Shrugged, adapted from Ayn Rand’s novel.

Meanwhile, Cruise appears in the comedy Tropic Thunder, which hit theaters yesterday.
