A year shy of the mid-century mark, The Newport Folk Festival kicks off today in Rhode Island. This year's line-up features a refreshingly eclectic mix of artists, ranging from indie darlings She & Him to tried and true veterans of the Americana scene Levon Helm and Steve Earle.
Not to toot our proverbial horn, but Paste's very own editor-at-large, Jay Sweet is the man behind this year's roster. He sat down with Fox Boston to discuss the revamped festival, as well as Paste's recent International Issue.
Additionally, Sweet did an interview with NPR where he talked about creating the Newport line-up and choosing acts that don't necessarily fall under the folk umbrella. He described this year's festival as not catering to a demographic, but a "psychographic," comprised of listeners with more "sophisticated" music tastes.
If you're one of those sophisticated types, we suggest you get up to Newport right quick and check out what our Mr. Sweet has put together.
