In a move that seems suspiciously fitted to its pun-triumphant name, a box set of avant-classical composer Philip Glass's work entitled, yes, Glass Box, will be released on Sept. 23 by Nonesuch Records.
The 10-disc career retrospective charts the wide-ranging course of Glass' corpus, hitting such disparate markers as his early works from 1969, well-known operas Einstein on the Beach and Satyagraha, film score contributions from The Hours, cult movie Koyaanisqatsi and The Fog of War; and string quartets and piano études.
A 191-page booklet that will come with Glass Box is to include a note from the composer, a collection of photography, various libretti and affectionate commentary from notable Glass fans and colleagues like Paul Simon and visual artist Chuck Close. And as if such fond recognition of stature weren't enough, the box itself will have five of its sides covered by photographs of Glass by Close, Robert Wilson, Francesco Clemente, Robert Mapplethorpe and Annie Leibovitz.
