The end of the year just got a whole lot more interesting. Surprising fans and critics alike, word has leaked that Kanye West is allegedly preparing to release his fourth album in December. In fact, a lead single, entitled "Love Lockdown," will supposedly hit iTunes sometime next week (perhaps as early as Monday).
The album is rumored to be called Good Ass Job, following the coming-of-age themes of The College Dropout, Late Registration and last year's Graduation. There's a strong possibility West will debut "Love Lockdown" at MTV's Video Music Awards (despite once proclaiming he would never perform at the VMAs again, after execs didn't allow him to perform on the main stage).
West isn't just solely focused on himself at the moment either (as crazy as that may sound). He's producing tracks for friend and contemporary Jay-Z for his upcoming The Blueprint 3 record, not coincidentally also due in December. Jay-Z and West's collaboration with fellow hip hop titans T.I. and Lil' Wayne, "Swagger Like Us," will supposedly hit iTunes tomorrow. The song's title and chorus sample Sri Lankan rapper M.I.A.'s breakout hit "Paper Planes," a song that is less than a year old and currently in the top five on Billboard's Hot 100. "Swagger" can be found on T.I.'s forthcoming record, Paper Trail, which hits Sept. 30.
With West and Jay-Z releasing records in the same month, the end of 2008 is starting to look like deja vu from 2007. West released Graduation the same day as 50 Cent's Curtis, amidst a whirlwind of publicity and hype. For the record, West emerged the sales victor. But when it comes to making quality music (and encouraging his peers to do the same), West is genuinely non-competitive.
"When I heard that thing about the debate, I thought that was the stupidest thing. When my albums drops and 50's album drops, you're gonna get a lot of good music at the same time," he said.
West's latest quest for worldwide domination and Grammy success will begin at MTV's VMAs, Sunday at 9 p.m. EST, where "Love Lockdown" will close out the show.
