After finishing its contract with Universal Music post-Rather Ripped, Sonic Youth will return to independent label Matador for its 16th album, to be released sometime in 2009.
So far, there's no verified report on the title, but Matador says the band will hit the studio this fall to begin recording. Thurston Moore, Kim Gordon, Lee Ranaldo and Steve Shelley will be working on their first indie record since 1988's Daydream Nation.
Sonic Youth will take a break from recording to do three October concerts in Italy (details below). The band is also preparing for the museum exhibit "Sonic Youth Etc.: Sensational Fix," which focuses on interdisciplinary projects from Sonic Youth's conception in 1981 through the present. The exhibition will premiere in Bolzano, Italy, and travel to Germany and Sweden next year.
