Bruce Springsteen to play 2009 Super Bowl halftime

The Boss has been signed as next year's Super Bowl halftime headliner. The XLIII game will be hosted in Tampa, FL on Feb. 1, and will broadcast in more than 230 countries.

This means money for Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, as the SB halftime show is consistently the most-watched musical performance of the year. The 2008 event boasted almost 150 million viewers, its main act—Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers—enjoying  a significant sales increase after the performance.

Since the Oct. 2007 release of Magic, Springsteen has completed a 100-show world tour. There's been no news of a 2009 album yet, but producer Brendan O'Brien confirmed that the band is sitting on several tracks that didn't make it onto the Magic album.

The Boss joins recent headliners Prince, Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones and (who could forget the 2004 halftime fiasco?) Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson. You can check out Tom Petty's Jan. performance here.
