Sufjan Stevens launches takeover at the Brooklyn Academy of Music

Though he's been keeping busy with his commissioned symphonies, production work and film scores, prolific folk hero Sufjan Stevens has set aside some time-- 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. on Sept. 27, to be exact-- to curate the 2008 edition of the Brooklyn Academy of Music's now-annual Takeover.

More than a concert, the follow up to last year's inaugural all-night party includes Guitar Hero sessions, four movie marathons, DJ sets and a funk-heavy lineup of musical performances.

The Budos Band and Naomi Shelton & the Gospel Queens are set to jam throughout the evening and early morning along with the Brooklyn Youth Chorus and Sufjan's old bandmate Annie Clark's St. Vincent. King Britt and Vikter Duplaix will provide a danceable alternative at the festivities with their DJ runs.

On the cinematic side of things, the four movie marathons will follow the themes of Booze (The Saddest Music in the World, Strange Brew, The Fatal Glass of Beer, Beerfest), Brooklyn (Saturday Night Fever, She's Gotta Have It, The Warriors), the year 1985 (The Last Dragon, Perfect, Fright Night) and haunted Danish hospitals (The Kingdom). While the latter two might not make much sense, beers are quoted at $3, making Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas equally entertaining companions to Sufjan and friends.

Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 (cash) at the door. For more information, and to purchase tickets, visit BAM.org.
