What can one say about America's marquee city of lights and culture that hasn't been said before? For Paste, it's inevitable that a large degree of our coverage revolves around artists and filmmakers who make this city their home. While our offices are located in the deep South and we spread our love equally to all 50 states, it's hard to ignore the energy of approximately 23 square miles of island that claim so many major institutions of music, film and culture.
Despite the mainstream focus the Big Apple receives, it's independent activity is equally as vibrant. The last ten years have witnessed a mass migration of activity into the outlying boroughs, with DIY filmmakers and writers flooding the Brooklyn neighborhoods of Williamsburg and Greenpoint, and satellite activity in Brooklyn Heights and Astoria. (It's surreal, for me at least, to know I'm shopping at the same grocery store as the bands I listened to in high school-- at least three of them live in a five block radius of me.) And aside from film and music, the ethnic diversity of NYC breeds some of the most eclectic food and drink available anywhere. From the decadent VIP bars in the Meatpacking District to the Polish Bistros of Brooklyn, no taste bud should go unsatisfied with this range of palette. As O. Henry once said, “It couldn't have happened anywhere but little old New York.”
With this new site, we're devoted to covering every inch of New York City for your reading pleasure. We ask you the reader to be just as much a part of our coverage as our writers. Comment on the stories and let us know about your favorite NYC artists and hotspots at newyork@pastemagazine.com.
