Wes Anderson has just signed on for his first project with Imagine, a re-make of the 2006 French comedy Mon Meilleur Ami. Anderson has agreed to write My Best Friend, which will be released through Universal.
In the Patrice Leconte-directed version, Daniel Auteuil plays Francois, a misanthropic antiques dealer who discovers that his acquaintances dislike him. Auteuil's character pays a cabbie to pose as his best friend in order to win a bet and stumbles into real friendship along the way.
Anderson is known for being one of the few remaining auteurs in Hollywood, but he's lately diverged from the factotum creative method, taking on the adaptation of Roald Dahl novel The Fantastic Mr. Fox, and now the Best Friend remake, for which his contract only includes the script (so far). He's got his eye on directing the film, says Variety, which is expected sometime next year.
