Broadway theaters pay homage to Paul Newman

Friday evening, the Broadway League devoted a moment of silence to Paul Newman's memory. The actor and philanthropist, who passed away on Sept. 26 at the age of 83, was best known for his screen work, but played several significant parts on the New York stage. House lights across Broadway were dimmed for one minute, just before curtain, in honor of his legacy.

During 1964's Baby Want a Kiss—one of a handful of stage appearances throughout the '50s and '60s—Newman met and starred opposite his wife of 50 years, Joanne Woodward. His 2002 role as the stage manager in Thornton Wilder's Our Town was his final live performance, for which he garnered a Tony nomination.

"The Broadway community mourns the loss of Paul Newman, the universally admired stage and screen actor, director, and philanthropist," the League said in a statement.
