Kevin Smith's Zack and Miri Make a Porno will be out on Halloween, but the surprisingly busy Smith is already hard at work on his next project. Make that his next two projects, since despite interest surrounding Red State still hasn't found a studio for funding. Couple this with his third lecture DVD's release and a limited series run Batman comic book out early next month to make this perhaps Smith's busiest period ever.
According to The Hollywood Reporter,
the new film is a "futuristic outer space
comedy." Unlike his previous comedies, though, it's centered around a
father-son relationship while poking fun at sci-fi conventions. "All
the relationships in the flicks I've done have been done
before, have been either a guy falling for a girl or two dudes
hanging out in a 'bromantic' comedy," said Smith. "I wanted to explore
a father and son."
The film will be Smith's most expensive yet, asking for a budget of $45-50 million, which is roughly twice the budget of Porno,
previously his most costly feature. Nevertheless, the Weinstein
Company is said to have interest in the film despite its own financial
troubles of late. The Weinsteins passed on Red State, but had produced all of Smith's previous pictures.
Still, the space film will have to wait until Red State,
currently hoping to film this Spring, is finished. Since so much is
still up in the air for that feature, it's too early to speculate much
more about when things will start moving forward for this one.
